Draw traffic with OpenSearch
Words by Daniel Aleksandersen on 2006-07-14
OpenSearch is a XML based technology for providing search results that can easily be used by any aggregator.
Providing OpenSearch search results for a Website can be a large source of traffic, and in the very near future a must for any Website. Windows Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft's upcoming Web browser that will replace Internet Explorer 6 automatically on every Windows dekstop computer in the very near future, supports adding OpenSearch search providers and automatically lets their users search the site they are viewing from the browser's inbuilt search field.
Getting started with and providing OpenSearch results is easy. Read A9's documentation and specifications, after having read and understood the How To Return OpenSearch Results.
By adding auto-discovery and submitting OpenSearch results to A9, traffic will come.
A bonus feature of OpenSearch is that the page will support subscriptional searching via RSS as well. Since OpenSearch results are RSS, the site can let it users create subscriptable search result feeds for themselves.
OpenSearch is developed by Amazon's own search engine A9.com, under a Creative Commons license.

Take a look at http://www.openSearchList.com which allows you to review OpenSearch entries. An end user can also add their own customized searches to IE7 or to Firefox 2.
