Social Profiles for Google

Social Profiles for Google

Posted on 19. Apr, 2009 by search_junkie in Search Engines

I noticed today at the Google blog that they now offer user profiles. Many sites allow you to use your name in the URL when setting up a profile. For instance, twitter.com/yourname or flickr.com/yourname, so this is not a new concept but I do believe it is part of Google’s increasing attempts to gain leverage in the social media realm.

But I have to wonder how they can prevent others from claiming your identity? I could not find too much on that after searching around a bit. I did see that you need a Google account to sign up and that your Gmail address would be made public from within your profile page and that is a real downer. Who wants their email address out there like that these days with all the spam?

I also wonder if businesses can sign up for this using their names? That would be a great addition but again, I have to wonder how they will police the thieving of other people’s names. This could turn into a PR nightmare if not handled right!
